concept
Hinged House fosters a community of urban farmers focused on sustainable living and education. Architecturally, it considers the interplay of geometric primitives and a part-to-whole relationship; disparate programs and ideas are unified to create a new typology for housing in Los Angeles. The formal ideas of Louis Kahn’s British castles are investigated through the modularity of a bar. A series of programmatic spaces are organized along three bars which hinge upon themselves. This diagram becomes a representational tool to showcase how the boundaries between public and private spaces become blurred through the use of interstitial space. Typologically, this project provides new opportunities for community engagement through inclusive spaces and shared amenities. This housing project is an urban campus for living, learning, and farming.
