The Detail as Joint
This facade exploration project employs innovative use of terracotta material through developable and doubly-curved surfaces. We investigate Edward R. Ford’s idea of the “detail as a joint” as discussed in The Architectural Detail. Inital base geometries are rationalized through a panelization script designed to output 4 panel types and one standardized clip. The idea of the “detail as a joint” is accentuated through its typical, yet hidden, panel-to-clip connection that gets arrayed and aggregated along the input geometry.
